Zach here. I found Nandan’s last post somewhat misleading, and thought I’d take a moment to set the record straight.

I’m not a “long-haired hooligan”, I’m a cineaste. Furthermore, I’ve never once chosen to “adopt a strong jersey accent”. It’s a New York accent, and I acquired it during my years studying cinema in lower Manhattan. Perhaps you’d like me to make fun of you for something you can’t help?

While Nandan’s account is more or less accurate, his lack of access to my thought process misconstrues the entire situation. Yes, there was a young woman sitting alone at the bar. And yes, I did decide to approach her, but only because I found her haunted, searching gaze strikingly similar to that of Delphine Seyrig in Alain Resnais’ L’année derniére á Marienbad and thought that the observation might tickle her. Perhaps she’d even compare me to leading man Giorgio Albertazzi (it wouldn’t be the first time). In any case, I headed for the bar and did in fact stop short just three feet away, but not of fear or childish jitters as Nandan’s post implies, but because upon closer inspection it became screamingly obvious that she was more of a Bergman gal. What Nandan perceived as a giggling fit actually consisted of deep, heaving sobs over the loss of the great master, a wound still less than two years fresh.

But all of this is beside the point. Nandan’s post was a classic, clear-cut case of misdirection. How does my crippling cinephilia in any way detract from the gravity of his blunder? Whatever. I’ll post that big news we keep mentioning once the two of us are on speaking terms again.
